Glass thimbles are for Soxhlet extraction and lens tissue for optics and precision surfaces. Both are consumables where substitutes can shed fibres and affect results.

Nitrocellulose gives low background and is easy to handle, so it dominates routine western blotting. PVDF binds more strongly and is more durable, which suits reprobing and protein sequencing.
